Message from Secretary Jeffrey S. Bragg Florida Department of Elder Affairs
Volunteer Month in Florida
April marks Florida’s Volunteer Month. What a per- fect time for you to express your appreciation to those who serve others and give of their time freely through- out the year! Volunteering not only bene ts the neigh- borhoods and communities where the work is done, but it also bene ts those providing the service. Studies show that by participating in volunteering activities, se- niors experience better health, both mentally and physi- cally, and have a more positive attitude toward aging.
Programs within the Department of Elder Affairs, such as the SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) and Long-Term Care Ombudsman Programs, could not be as successful without the outstanding number of volunteers, including senior volunteers, who give of their time to assist other seniors throughout the year. Florida’s volunteers bring knowledge, commit- ment, and hope to those in their community by building astronger, morecompassionatestateforusall.Their
volunteering also contributes to the improvement of their own health.
We truly appreciate the commitment and dedica- tion of our volunteers, particularly our senior volunteers, as well as the valuable role they play. Our most recent numbers show that in one year, elders volunteered more than 180 million hours, which is valued at more than $4 billion.
To our volunteers, thank you for your willingness to give your time and services to the people of Florida and for your tireless work ethic and generosity of heart. You truly do make Florida a better place, and we hope you will continue to support and serve our elders through- out the state.
