Water Safety Day
Melbourne Beach’s Volunteer Fire Department will team with the local Brevard-area Coast Guard Auxiliary to launch the town’s  rst Recreational Boating & Water Safety Day.
To held on Saturday 10 March at the municipal complex located at 507 Ocean Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free RBWS event will be open to the public, featuring a variety of ser- vices and events including:
Vessel Safety Checks. To earn your 2018 USCG Decal, bring your boat, jet ski, kayak or canoe to the MBFD Station on Ocean Avenue between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.; or, schedule a vessel
exam at your home (dock or driveway). Quali ed Coast Guard Auxiliary Examiners
will be on hand, and can also answer your boating questions. Safety isn’t the only reason to get a Vessel Safety Check: boats with a current ’18 decal may earn
an insurance discount.
Earn Your FL Boater’s ID.A free class spon- sored by MBFD will be given by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,

at the town’s Community Center, locat- ed next to the Fire Station. This class is limited to 30 attendees. Every Floridi- an born after 1988 is required to have a Florida Boater’s ID to operate any powered vessel on the State’s waters.
Basic “Hands Only” CPR Courses. MBVFD’s AHA-certi ed instructors will present two hands-only CPR courses, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and again from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Each class is limited to 10 students.
Basic Ocean Safety Courses. MB- VFD’s Marine Rescue Unit members will present two courses explaining local hazards that can include rip currents, dangerous marine life, hazardous weather conditions, and basic rescue procedures. Each presentation lasts 30 minutes, starting at 10 a.m., and again at 1 p.m. There is no limit to class size.
Other family-oriented, kid-friendly training will include: knot tying, heav- ing line throwing, life vest  tting, radio use, local Indian River Lagoon geogra- phy, and paddle board safety stations.
A trailered US Coast Guard 29ft Pa- trol Boat, a trailered Coast Guard Aux- iliary Patrol Boat, MBVFD’s  re engines and marine rescue units, and MBPD cruisers will be on display, as well.
