What’s Happening at Churches in May
May is a remarkable month on the Christian calendar — and if you’ve been meaning to visit a church, or come back to one, this might be the month to do it. There are three observances in rapid succession, each one distinct, each one worth your time.
First, the National Day of Prayer Thursday of May 7. Who wouldn’t say we need prayer? Prayer is the one thing people across every background, tradition, and political conviction can still agree to do. You don’t have to have prayer all figured out. You just have to try.
Ten days after National Day of Prayer comes one of the most overlooked observances in the Christian year: Ascension Sunday. This is the day the church marks Jesus departing from his disciples and ascending to the Father — not abandoning them, but completing one chapter so that another could begin.
Then comes Pentecost — the birthday of the church, the day the Holy Spirit arrived like fire and wind and turned a group of ordinary people into something the world couldn’t ignore. Pentecost is the answer to the question the Ascension raises. You’re not left alone. Someone — comes alongside you.
