A Reflection for Father’s Day
The “World’s Greatest Dad” mug overstates all fathers quite a bit. The Bible doesn’t pretend fatherhood is easy. It takes it seriously. One story Jesus told captures the heart of God’s perspective on it really well.
A younger son demands his inheritance early, wastes it, and eventually crawls home expecting nothing more than a servant’s wage. Here’s what he finds instead: “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” Luke 15:20 The father was watching. The moment he saw his son on the horizon, he ran — undignified, unhesitating, unconditional.
Jesus told this story as a portrait of God. Not arms crossed. Not a ledger of failures. Eyes on the horizon, moving toward us. And for the fathers reading this: you don’t have to be perfect. You have to be present … and willing to run.
God is the Father you were made for. His eyes are already on the horizon, looking for you.
