October Waiting Faith
Every Floridian knows the feeling: sometime in October, after months of soupy humidity, a cool front finally pushes through. I used to think that it waited until after our children had a sweaty Halloween trick or treat night! The air changes quickly. People open windows they haven’t touched since March. Evening walks are friendlier, breathing is a little easier, sweating isn’t as big an issue. We don’t get falling leaves down here in Florida but we do get a fall relief.
There’s something in that waiting for October worth pondering. Christian scripture is full of people enduring a long, heavy stretch before the relief comes — Israel in the wilderness, the disciples in the storm, the psalmist crying out, how long, O Lord? (Psalm 13:1). We tend to think faith means never feeling the weight of waiting. It doesn’t. Faith means trusting the cool weather is coming even in the thick of August. Paul put it plainly: we do not lose heart… for this light momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:16-17). Maybe that’s our October reminder: the humidity always breaks eventually — and so, in God’s time, does everything else we’re hoping for.
