ENJOY THE JOURNEY TO YOUR BEST LIFE
By Pamela Morley
“Now’s the time!” – “Better late than never!” – “If I knew now what I knew then!” – “Just do it!”
All those phrases that let you know age is no deterrent. When you hear your biological clock ticking…not for reproductive purposes, but wondering when your clock might stop; there is never a better time to do something you always wanted to do. I was playing a dinner table game once where the question was: “What is your dream occupation?” Hmmm, my best life?
I remember thinking I couldn’t decide between an art teacher, a yoga instructor or a medium. Yes, a medium! At the time, I was working as a full time high school teacher and was about ten years from retirement. But that little game must have sparked some sort of inner manifestation in me. Time went by and I retired from teaching in 2013. We started our stint as “snowbirds” between New York and Florida.
I had been taking Zumba classes for about ten years and started to have a hard time finding the class I wanted at the time I wanted; and my husband said, ”Why don’t you just become a Zumba teacher and you can teach the class when you want?” Me? A Zumba teacher? My hips don’t really work that way! But, something made me sign up and take the certification class in Orlando, Florida with a couple hundred others. At the time I was 58 years old and there were probably ten or so people my age or older in the class. Was it intimidating? Yes. Was everyone welcoming? Yes. Did I feel accomplished? YES! Next step – start teaching classes. It was easier than I thought. Places are always looking for substitutes.
Eventually I started my own class in a Physical Therapy Center. But as an older instructor, teaching mostly older participants, I felt the traditional Zumba dance class needed a little tweaking. We needed to stretch! So I took an online basic Yoga certification class and incorporated 15-20 minutes of yoga stretches at the end of class. But what else did we need? Strength training! So we added in some weights. And let’s not forget balance! So that was incorporated as well. And there it was. “Zumboga” was born. I was teaching my class at a local Moose Lodge while snowbirdjng in Florida, but that was in 2020! So, with Covid, we were forced to move our class outdoors. I eventually partnered up with the Brevard County Parks and Recreation and held the classes on their large basketball court.
We have been there five years now and we have 100 followers on our Facebook Page. So I am going to give this a check for my dream as a yoga instructor – close enough! On my way to my best life! Also after retirement, I brought out my long ago stored paints, brushes and canvases and started to paint almost daily.
Ten years later, I belong to three art clubs in Florida, have sold hundreds of paintings and teach classes every now and then. Check off art teacher! And last but not least, did I become a medium? And how could I possibly do that? Well, in June of 2025, I published my first book, “Enjoy the Journey, A Medium’s Path to the Other Side”, available on Amazon; which tells the story of how I became a practicing medium.
I now do readings for people all over the country both virtually and in person and I am told this helps greatly with people dealing with grief of the loss of a loved one. Outside of the happiness and fulfillment I get from being a wife, mother of three, and grandmother of ten, I need to nourish my body, mind and soul and I have manifested that! Yes, I am enjoying my journey – my best life!
