Not Knowing

Not knowing is a toughie. Not knowing what the stock market will do, not knowing how to do something on your computer, not knowing what tomorrow holds, not knowing an answer to your grandchild’s question … all are tough. Advent means coming, most precisely in the Christian narrative Jesus coming again. When is that? We don’t know. Even Jesus, it sounds like, didn’t know. He said, “Only the Father knows.” (Matthew 24:36) Not knowing is tough.
Once again this year, with Advent, we realize we are waiting for the coming of God-based fulfillment and not knowing when it will happen is tough. But not knowing when, and the waiting for that when, is tough. Tough doesn’t mean it is not going to happen. The God we know in Jesus isn’t the kind of person to make a promise and then not come through on it. The quality of who he is impacts how we take what he says. So we wait, again this year, not hopelessly, but rather respectfully and patiently, because of the quality of Jesus Christ. “Come, Lord.”
