Summer Faith
July is here. The heat is here. The thunderheads are here. The summer booklist and travel is here. The Fourth and fireworks and picnics are here. And gratitude for all this is right and good. So let it be here as well.
The gratitude is definitely about leisure and freedom, not only the secular kind, but the kind the Bible speaks of. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free,” wrote the Apostle Paul. He meant freedom from the things that quietly enslave us like fear, self-contempt, other-contempt, self-centeredness, base living. There isn’t true freedom with these afoot and the power to live beyond them comes from God.
Let gratitude then be realized and felt and nurtured over these wonderful, long summer days. Gratitude for a country. Gratitude for neighbors. Gratitude to the One who, as the old hymn puts it, “has blessed our land with grace.”
