WILL YOU CHOOSE THE RAINBOW?
By Jerry O’Meara

You may agree with me when I say that the daily news has not been uplifting lately. That may even be an understatement.

I cannot recall any other period when political divisions in our nation were as pronounced as they are now.

If we wish to be introspective I suppose one could argue that the news of the day has not been uplifting for many years or perhaps ever.

I recently read a book about our second President John Adams. He loathed the press. The media was so critical of him that he passed a law making it illegal to publish false, scandalous, and malicious writings about him.

Newspapers immediately tested the new law and at least one of the journalists was arrested and sent to prison. But still, they wrote.

Has anything changed over these many years? I think not. What is our defense against negativity, against evil? How do we keep hatred from souring our day?

We simply see the “Rainbow.”

The “Rainbow” is in the sunrise, in our child’s or grandchild’s smile, in our garden, in our pets’ adoring eyes, in our spouses’ loving face over morning coffee, and in our neighbors greeting during our morning walk.

The “Rainbow” or the “Good” as we may prefer to call it is there for us. Despite efforts to dispel it either by our own dismissive thoughts or by outside pessimism, it is always there. It resides in our soul.

It is difficult to escape the onslaught of disturbing news. However, we may be confident knowing that our world is a wonderful place. Our world is filled with interesting, high-quality people and breathtakingly beautiful places.

Turmoil, hysteria, calamities and natural disasters are a part of life, but political hatred is a choice.

May we opt for the “Rainbow”?
